Right. I got mixed up. Ludo was later. First, when Hoggle led me out of the Oubliette (it deserves a capital letter) we were still underground with all these stone faces that were telling us to go back, then it was Him again, the Goblin King. Who got mad at Hoggle for letting me out, but then Hoggle said he was leading me back to the beginning just like he'd been ordered. I didn't know what to think - was he lying to the king, or to me?

So the Goblin King asked me what I thought of the Labyrinth so far. Well of course I was scared stiff but I couldn't let him know that - I'd rather die! (Actually, I'd better not say things like that... people might take that as an invitation to kill me. "What's said is said" and all that. (shudders)) So I put my chin up and said that it was a piece of cake. Which got him really mad, so he sent the Cleaners after us (that deserves a capital too). Though I'm not sure what they were meant to clean - it was still dirty and dusty and cobwebby down there. Maybe they were supposed to "clean" rock-falls, because it was like this huge drill, a thing the exact size of the tunnel, with all these whirling spikes. And it was bearing down on us really fast, so of course Hoggle and I had to run. And then we hit a dead end -- well it wasn't quite, there were wooden doors in front and to the side, but they were locked. We managed to knock down the one to the side just before the Cleaners got to us, and they went through the door to the front like it wasn't there, left this big hole behind. What if that had been us? (shudder)

What they never tell you in fairy tales is how scary it all is. The heros are always bold and righteous, and the heroines are always faithful and patient, without a word of complaint. Huh. I complained a lot. Because it wasn't fair. He kept changing the rules. "I wonder what your standard of comparison is." Why did he say that?

There were rules, I suppose:
* What's said is said
* Stop taking things for granted
* Nothing is as it seems
* It's not fair, and that's the way it is.

Hmmm.

Um, where was I? Right, the Cleaners. Then we climbed up this ladder and up above ground again, into the maze again. We climbed out of an urn! Nothing is as it seems. So a trapdoor is disguised as a huge urn. Nothing straightforward there, yeah.

So then was the strange man with the talking bird hat. And then the roaring. I'd forgotten that Hoggle ran away at that point. He kept on calling himself a coward, but he proved not to be in the end, dear Hoggle.

And then I rescued Ludo and we became friends. So we went on together, and came to another pair of doors with another pair of guardians, this time talking door-knockers. The other pair of doors had been guarded by... I'm not sure if it was two creatures or one creature with two heads, because there was one head on the top and the other on the bottom, but they were hiding behind a huge shield so I couldn't tell. But that was the earlier pair of doors. This one, as I said, had talking door-knockers. One couldn't hear, because his ring was in his ears, and one couldn't talk because his ring was in his mouth. So I took his ring out and asked him what was behind the doors, and he didn't know. "We're just the knockers!" he said. Then he wouldn't let me knock his door to open the door, because he didn't want the ring back in his mouth, but I tricked him into opening it, and knocked, and went through.

Ludo and I came into this dank and gloomy forest - I swear, it's like you're being teleported, each bit of the Labyrinth is so unlike the next, and you can't tell what the next bit is going to be like. No shadows of trees, no rustling sounds, not a hint before we went through that door.

So we went along - at least there was a path of sorts - and then Ludo vanished. I was alone again.

(gotta rush - more later)
